Abuela Tonalmitl Yaoxochitl
(Guadalupe Retiz), Mexico
As a spiritual leader and heir to the ancestral Mexican knowledge, Abuela Tonalmitl travels throughout Mexico and other places in the world, promoting spirituality and re-connection with our feminine essence. She is a specialist in the knowledge and interpretation of codices and the Tonalamatl, which is the sacred book of the Mexicas. The book tells of the relationship between human beings and the energy of nature and the cosmos and is considered a timeline of human life (but not a calendar). She organizes dance circles with women that generates physical, mental and spiritual healing. To her, dancing helps fight disease and harmonizes us energetically. It frees us from anguish and suffering which impede our happiness and spiritual development, because they generate confusion that arises from our identity as human beings and Mexicans. She is a feminist, environmentalist, and an activist for the preservation of ancestral heritage of indigenous communities. She promotes the idea that people must act in a consistent and responsible way towards Mother Earth, who is currently under threat because of the lifestyle we lead. For her, it is important to support the spiritual and craft work of the indigenous elder women, especially in the craft of embroidery.
