Rishikesh is a holy city for Hindus, located in the state of Uttarakhand, in India. It is one of the busiest pilgrimage sites as it is known as the capital of Yoga and the Himalayan gate.
The Ganges River runs through the city, making it the shrine of the Ganga Aratik which is offered candles and flowers every day. According to many Hindu yogis and sadhus, the banks of the rivers have spiritual and religious importance, as the place where the Ganges River is formed by the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers in Devprayag in the Garhwal Himalayan region. Respected teachers dictate courses, bidding offerings ceremonies, every day. Pilgrims travel from all over the world to study, pray, take a holy bath and purify themselves with these sacred waters.
In Rishikesh you will find one of the largest ashrams complexes in the world; one of the most important is the Parmarth Niketan Ashram where an annual one-week convention is held; the International Yoga Festival, which will be held in March this year.
